số + nghìn / triệu + đồng

Big numbers are built in groups: nghìn (thousand) and triệu (million). Prices are usually said without “đồng”: năm mươi nghìn means 50,000 dong. In the south you will also hear ngàn for thousand. For “half”, use rưỡi: một triệu rưỡi = 1.5 million.

Tip: Prices are often shortened: “năm mươi” can mean 50,000 when the context is clear.

Examples

Cái này hai mươi nghìn đồng.
This costs 20,000 dong.
Một triệu rưỡi.
One and a half million.
Tôi có hai trăm nghìn.
I have 200,000.
Giá năm mươi nghìn một ký.
The price is 50,000 per kilo.
