Pattern

A + và / nhưng / hoặc + B

Và joins things (and), nhưng contrasts them (but), and hoặc offers a choice (or). For reasons use vì … nên …: Vì trời mưa nên tôi ở nhà. The two words often appear together, but either one can be dropped.

Tip: In everyday speech people often say only nên or only vì.

Examples

Tôi thích cà phê và trà.
I like coffee and tea.
Phở ngon nhưng hơi nóng.
The phở is delicious but a bit hot.
Bạn muốn uống trà hoặc cà phê?
Would you like tea or coffee?
Vì trời mưa nên tôi ở nhà.
Because it's raining, I'm staying home.
