Num + CL + N

Between a number and a noun, Vietnamese uses a classifier: con for animals, cái for objects, quyển for books, người for people, chiếc for single items and vehicles. Hai con mèo = two cats.

Tip: When unsure, cái works for most objects.

Examples

  • Tôi có hai con mèo.

    I have two cats.

  • Cho tôi ba cái ly.

    Three glasses, please.

  • Tôi mua một quyển sách.

    I bought a book.

  • Có năm người trong nhóm.

    There are five people in the group.
