S + bị / được + V

Bị marks something unpleasant that happens to the subject, and được marks something good or allowed. Tôi bị mất ví = I lost my wallet (it happened to me). Tôi được nghỉ = I get to rest, or I'm allowed to.

Tip: Choose by feeling: bad news takes bị, good news takes được.
